Hope Into Action

The very first Teens Take On Climate field trip in February 2022 was to the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, Illinois, for their annual Immersion event. That year Dr. Sylvia Earle presented her work with Mission Blue to spread awareness about the importance of ocean conservation. Dr. Earle spoke about Hope Spots, areas of the ocean with special significance as conservation areas. Young people drew pictures of their interpretations of Hope Spots onto tiles to then be incorporated into a larger mosaic that is still visible in the Hope Into Action: Teens Take On Climate Internship Shedd Aquarium today.

This year, the Great Lakes became the first freshwater areas designated as Hope Spots. Because of Lake Michigan’s importance to the city of Chicago, we were excited to incorporate our own version of Hope Spots into the Teens Take On Climate Program.

The work you see here are the interns’ renditions of their personal Hope Spots. They are areas where the young people feel a deep connection and a desire to care for and improve in effort to address the climate crisis. Since the Hope Spots each individual intern identified were as unique as they are and often focused on resources besides water, we have named these our Climate VIPs. With each canvas you will find an explanation of why each young person’s Climate VIP is so important to them and how they are able to relate climate justice to their everyday lives.

  • Central Park, NYC by Danny Cattron

The park acts as a carbon sink, absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, thus helping to mitigate the effects of climate change. It also contributes to improving air quality in the city by filtering pollutants and particulate matter from the surrounding air. Central Park provides fresh air for people who want to walk around for a little peace. Also for people living nearby it’s a great view. I would add more solar panels to the park to enhance it and go green. I will protect the New York Central Park by attempting to put more funds in it so everyone is happy and satisfied with the park being there and also putting more police officers around to watch people that litter.

  • Amazon Rainforest by Josh Williams

The world would be a better place if this spot is protected because 20-27% of all tree species in the world are in the Amazon. Trees are great for purifying air through photosynthesis and because so many trees are in the Amazon, the rainforest is responsible for purifying most of the world’s air. If this area stayed open to be harvested and cut down, the air quality would drastically decrease. What I will do to protect this Hope Spot is raise awareness to what the forest could do to fix the problem of decreasing air quality. Telling people who I know know nothing about the problem of air quality and how the forest can greatly benefit the planet if it is protected. In a perfect world the best qualities of my Hope Spot would be even more diversity in animal and plant life, beautiful scenery, being one of the only places on the planet that is almost untouched by people, and being a great factor into how pure the air we breathe is.

  • Englewood, Chicago, IL by Lorianna Calhoun

When we went somewhere (I forgot where it was in STEM club) the speaker said people in Englewood have a shorter life expectancy because of the chemicals that were dumped here in the past because the city didn’t care about the area since it was a black community, so the world is a better place because fixing Englewood's environmental problems would help uphold environmental justice. People’s health would’ve better and protected and things are more fair if Englewood is protected to the same extent as other (richer, whiter) neighbors than Chicago. I am a better person if Englewood is protected because my health and wellbeing will be better along with the rest of the people in the community. To protect the Hope Spot I would not litter and encourage other people not to, bring awareness to any toxic factories that may be causing health problems, start petitions to get funding for cleaning things like uninhabitable soil, litter, ect. To enhance the Hope Spot I would bring more community gardens, greenhouses, and farms to provide more food and jobs and plants to clean the air. In a perfect world, the best qualities that my Hope Spot has are: No toxic chemicals or factories causing pollution no litter clean air clean street Local gardens, greenhouses, farms, etc. Local Farms

  • Local Farms by Cemiyah Stubblefield

The world is a better place because animals provide us with food that we need to survive and if we run out of food we would starve or if the animals aren’t taken care of properly they could catch diseases that affect the food they provide. Also the crops farms grow also are needed in our daily lives as food in general or ingredients we use to create recipes. I will talk more about it with animal lovers because not only we need them to survive but also they love animals so it will be easy to talk to them about the situation since they already love animals and we could create a crew around the world that would protect the farms near them by caring for the cows/making sure their health is good and make sure they get the care they need. They will also take care of the crops because some animals eat the things they grow so that’s important. In a perfect world, my Hope Spot has 24 hour care and monitoring, professional workers that know a lot about plants or animals to make sure they are getting the proper care they are supposed to get in general.

  • Dan Ryan Woods, Chicago IL by Taohidat Wahab

I am a better person if this Hope Spot is protected because there aren’t a lot of places in Chicago that have good trails and that are not damaged by people. If you like to walk, jog, or love doing cardio there is an amazing trail where you could do just that. The park is also a good place to have a picnic and is a very peaceful place to think and brainstorm any ideas you have. This place is one of the only greenest places I have seen in Chicago (which reminded me of Maine). What I can do is when me, my dad, and siblings go to walk again we can try to be mindful of the things we leave behind and try not to harm any of the plants. I could also try to clean the spot if there is any leftover trash from others. I could improve it by emailing the owners and helping take better care of the trees. Some best qualities are that it has several places of just open grass and plants that are very healthy. There are many places where animals can be who they are and don’t have to deal with others’ endangering their homes. Lots and lots of trees and some have a tree of affirmations of others to give you confidence. Where the affirmation tree is, we could have a festival once in a while. ( A word of affirmation tree is where you put affirmations about yourself or others on a note and tie it on the tree so others could go if they’re having a bad day and read some affirmations to help them feel better.)

  • Ford City Movie Theater by Jayla Tyus

I chose this because Ford City has great service when I go there. The food is fresh and the rooms are relaxing. The movies I watch are great for entertainment. The bathroom spaces are clean and work perfectly with no toilet problems. Things that threaten my Hope Spot are social media trends & fights lead to violence. People leave their trash behind and waste food on the floor which takes time for the janitors to clean up. This causes more time which can stop another movie from playing next. Things that can change and make the space better are more security outside and custodians having the ability to clean faster.ription goes here

  • Hoard Park Basketball Court by Prince McGill

My Hope Spot is Hoard Park Basketball Court. It’s my Hope Spot because that’s where I hang out with my friends, also that’s where I go to play basketball and that’s where I find peace. What threateds my Hope Spot is gang violence. What I think would improve my Hope Spot is to build a bigger community so the gangs won’t feel welcome and also keep the basketball court clean ny picking up trash and stop littering.

  • Country Club Hills Bike Trail by Icey M. Payne Jr.

My Hope Spot is the Country Club Hills Bike Trail. I chose this spot because it’s a chill place where you can exercise and communicate. We have a bathroom so other people wouldn’t use the bathroom in the woods. The thing that threatens my Hope Spot is that some people litter there. Things that I hope doesn’t happen is that people would build things like houses there after they have built the bathroom and sometimes people speed on the bike trail. Things that can make it better are putting up signs or a lane for the speeders and a sign or trash can for the people that litter.

  • MLK Skating Rink by Egypt Owens

My Hope Spot is the MLK Skating Rink. I chose this place as my Hope Spot because I’ve been going since I was 5 years old and I have made alot of memories since then. Now that I am older I like to go with friends. The MLK Skating Rink is very fun and entertaining and has fun activities for people to do.

  • Neighborhood Playground by Trevior Walls

My Hope Spot is a neighborhood playground. I picked this Hope Spot because it can be a way to bring the community together. A problem it has is shootings, violence and fights. The playground is important because it is entertainment for kids. It can be better if police can patrol around the playground.

  • My Block by Alize Johnson

My Hope Spot is my block. I’ve chosen this because it’s where I live and my whole social network lives there. I feel safer my block for the most part, but you’re never really safe over there. My block is very territorial. Outsiders can’t come without someone from our block or without someone knowing. I have lived in/on/at my block for about 7 years. Things that threaten my block are outsiders: if they know that we’re territorial and they’re not allowed there without an insider. Why would they come? Many fights, shootouts and arguments can happen on my block. Especially at block parties. I can help stop or limit this by talking to my people and the people that I know and tell them to limit it. I can also have someone tell the outsiders to stop coming randomly. I can try to limit the gang activity. We can also have insiders be on the lookout for outsiders and tell them to leave our block.

  • Aquatic Life by Carrie Richardson

Aquatic Life is my Hope Spot because it helps me learn about different species that live in the ocean. My second reason why I chose Aquatic Life as my Hope Spot is because I’m mostly worried about humans killing off fishes and other sea species that are a part of the aquatic environment and the ocean makes me happy. The reason why I like discovering about aquatic life is more interesting to me!

  • Englewood by Gregory Latham

My Hope Spot is Englewood because the good things that have been done over time such as a mall with a Whole Foods and more things for families that don’t have a car to get to for food locations. Other good things include less trash on the floor thant before. The thing Englewood needs to improve are to have police do their job right and not take people and treat them like animals. I picked this Hope Spot because this is a place I grew up and half of my family lives over there in Englewood. The things Englewood needs to be a better community consists of helping the people that are on drugs and making a safe place for them. Then Englewood would be the best if those things get done.
